What did you think about it?

 1. It was interesting. Not my favourite of his, but it'll do.
 2. This is my favorite book by Steinbeck. I had to read "The Pearl" in 7th grade, and predjudiced me against him as a writer [I was way too sensitive in 7th grade to read "The Pearl"]. However, this book has it's deep points, but light and humorous points as well. It made me happy to know that somone who can see the beautifully dirty parts of humanity can still see the happy and the joyful part of it too.
 3. I loved it.
 4. I'm about halfway through, and so far it fucking rocks.
 5. What more can I say? It's a wonderful book and Douglas Coupland is an absolute genius. What I like the most about it is that in between the apparent coldness of technology and the modern world you can find a huge amount of humanity and pure feelings in the story. I find the personal, spiritual, professional and emotional growth of the characters very appealing and inspiring. Apart from that, it's a very interesting book that deals with life in the mega cultures of our society, the corporate life, relationships, friendship, the work life, new projects and such; plus, it is full of enchanting cultural, technologic, artistic and mediatic references that are delectable for someone so interested in humanity and society and popular culture like me.
 6. Well ive just travelled around Wales, followed by Ireland, followed by Scotland with her, and am now in St Ives, so it's pretty exhausting!
 7. The beginning when faster than the end.
 8. I like her writing style very much so enjoyed it. I like the way she switches between characters to tell the story.
 9. I really enjoyed it, although it was a bit like a slippery bar of soap. Everytime I went to grab the storyline it slipped away from me. Vague, beautiful and intriguing.
 10. iffy.

I’m going on holiday in 4 weeks and I am desperate for good books to take with me. Books I have enjoyed this year: The Poisonwood Bible, Vernon God Little, The Secret Life of Bees. Can you recommend a book that I should take on holiday? Nothing too heavy please. Tell me why I would like it too (if you can be arsed).

 1. Nothing too heavy? In her Shoes? It's chick lit...what can I say.
 2. Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole. It's bizzare and the hero is not someone many of us would be friends with in real life, but I find myself rooting for him anyway. Plus, its long, and will fill the time nicely. A fun and silly read, but still thinky enough to satisfy.
 3. Beats the shit out of me; I don't get to read that much anymore with two kids.
 4. Davinci Code - makes you think about what really goes on inside the Louvre.
 5. I'd recommend: *Generation X by Douglas Coupland: It's a great book that's very deep and interesting, which leaves you with many things to ponder and think about and lessons learned. *Sex and the city by Candace Bushnell: It's funny, candid and true and a good analysis of not only love and relationships in Manhattan, but everywhere. Besides, it's nice to see where everything originated from. *Kitchen, by Banana Yoshimoto: It's one of the best books I have read this year. What a beautiful story and way of telling it, it will make you smile and be touched. It includes as well a novella called "Moonlight shadow", which is wonderful and very sad. That's all I can think of right now.
 6. Captain Corelli's Mandolin by Louis De Bernia (spelt ever so slightly wrong!) is brill-i-ant. But heavey. Try the one above! Go travelling with her...whilst she travels! (She has a man in every port too, which makes it nicely naughty.)
 7. I have been reading the third Lord of the Rings book for three years now, I don't think I'm the person to answer this question.
 8. The Time Travellers Wife was a brilliant read, I couldn't put it down. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Piccoult (I am on a roll), and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer which made me want to cry but was also incredibly engaging.
 9. ...
 10. zora neale hurston "their eyes were watching god"

 1. The lights twinkling on the office tree.
 2. My bookshelves. They hold my most prized posessions: books and my art supplies. They also have some artsy bottles and bowls and scarves on top, which make me look interesting and tasteful. I'd line my walls with full bookshelves if I could afford it.
 3. My computer.
 4. Bowl of popcorn beside me.
 5. The blue chair I'm sitting in (I'm in the office). Oh, and maybe that Chupa chups I'm going to have as soon as I finish answering this lovely quiz.

 4. Surfaces covered with grad-school crap. When? Yeah right, that's funny, Heelandlass.
 5. Probably the front pocket of my courier bag. I have lots of little papers and notes, a pen, some candy, a lighter, headphones, mini plug, ChapStick, mini army knife, toothbrush, eye drops, wallet, tissues, ohashi and the goddess knows what else! When am I going to do it? I don't know. Soon? I'm such a procrastinator.
 6. Im sucking my pen, and everything in my office needs tidying. Everything.
 7. The kitchen counter. In all likelihood, I won't be tidying it, since the roommates tend to get to it much faster.
 8. The kitchen - especially under the sink. I might do it by the end of the year.
 9. Filing tray things. This week. Definitely this week.

If you were my real life friend, what would you buy me for my birthday?

 1. Something goofy and fun that fit your personality, or something that had a meaning to us from an inside joke or the like.
 2. Probably nothing. I find random gifts more fun. In which case, I'd probably make you a card, and buy you either a book, or treat you to drinks at your favorite place. Sometimes memories are the best presents.
 3. I'd probably take you out for lunch, then take a quick trip to either the bookstore or the day spa.
 4. A nice wicker seating set from Pier 1.
 5. I'll get you a fine paper notebook, a book I know you'd love, I'll make you a little bday card and I'll take you to dinner with the rest of the gang and we'd have a fab time!
 6. A month long de-tox book so it could go straight in the bin.

What’s the best birthday present you’ve ever bought anyone?

 1. A whole collection of random maple leaf stuff as they are a HUGE fan.
 2. It wasn't for a birthday, but when my best friend got married, I gave her one of the toys she used to play with at my house when we were little. It was a little tiny bear. I had a little rabbit, and we used to make clothes and toys for them in grade school. I'd saved most of the things she made, like a little book and clothes and a little bed, and gave them all to her.
 3. Not sure.
 4. An 80's outfit for my little sister a LONG time ago, when we were very young. It was complete with leggings and an oversized, black and white printed top.
 5. More than buying, I always like to make something special for the person like a personalised OOAK card, a painting, a cake or a colourful banner, apart from getting one of two gifts that the person really wants or would love. There have been occasions where I have gone all the way for someone and I have enjoyed it so much. Sure, buying stuff is always fun and all but I like to take a moment and show the person how much I appreciate them and what they mean to me, because bdays are all about celebrating the birth of someone dear to you.

Talk me through the best thing/most reliable thing you cook, come on – you know there’s at least one thing.

 1. well, I make a mean sandwich and I follow recipes really well.
 2. I make super awesome spaghetti. Granted, it's not quite from scratch, but I'm working up to that. I start by browning some hamburger with some onions. Then, when the hamburger is mostly cooked, I add some sauce from a jar [Neuman's Own, perferably], and add a little salt [I measure it in my hand]. Then I add some red, orange, and yellow bell peppers. I let that simmer a bit, then I add some fresh garlic. I let that simmer while the noodles are boiling. I cook it until the onions are soft, but the peppers are still crunchy. I don't like to let the peppers cook too long with the meat, so you still get the distinct flavors, and the peppers make the sauce a little sweet.
 3. Chicken Pot Pie 10 oz peas and carrots 1/3 cup butter 1/3 cup flour 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/2 tsp salt 1/4 tsp pepper 1/2 tsp rosemary 1 3/4 cups chicken broth 2/3 cups milk 2.5-3 cups cut up cooked chicken Pastry for 9 inch 2 crust pie (you can adjust seasonings to taste) Heat butter in saucepan lover low heatuntil melted. Stir in flour, onion, salt, pepper and rosemary. Cook, stirring constantly, until misture is bubbly; remove from heat. Stir in broth and milk. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil and stir 1 minute. Stir in chicken and vegetables. Pour into pastry, place top pastry. Bake in 425* oven until golden brown, about 35 minutes.
 4. Oh, jeez - where to start? I make this dish called taco bake, and the recipe is really long. Email me and I'll give it to you. acornotravez at hotm@il dot calm.
 5. I'm having a dinner party! Want to come over for supper? Here's what we'll have: A small entrée of Insalata caprese. Fettuccine with old-style tomato sauce, flavoured with garlic, spices and black olives. Chicken sauté in white wine and herb light sauce, with a side of vegetable medley. For dessert, red fruit cheesecake. To drink, my famous and well-loved Midnight cocktail and an assortment of soft drinks. (Of course, everything in small portions! Would you prefer some traditional Japanese?)
 6. As mentioned, my roast veg and goats cheese lasagna. Own recipe, and never had an unsatisfied customer.
 7. Chocolate Lumpies (No bake cookies) or Stir Fry.
